Digital Archive of Artists’ Publishing Code of Conduct
The Digital Archive of Artists’ Publishing (DAAP) is committed to providing a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone engaging with the archive. Reflecting a multitude of different identities, views and experiences across professional and voluntary capacities, our community involves but is not exclusive to artists, publishers, researchers, administrators, software developers, educational and institutional bodies. In order to support a nuanced discussion it is necessary that everyone employ an active practice of inclusion. For this reason all interactions in the DAAP community are covered by the following Code of Conduct.
Inclusivity
- As a participating member of the DAAP community you are expected to help create safe, respectful environments, where thoughtful, engaged discussion and problem-solving can take place. If disagreements arise, please proceed in a polite and professional manner.
- The DAAP community is international and diverse, and all conduct needs to be sensitive to the many different social and cultural norms around language, and behaviour, that all communication entails. As a participant you are expected to conduct yourself in ways that are unlikely to cause offense. *Discussion takes place primarily in English, and as English is not everyone’s native language there is a need to remember that unnecessary use of jargon or slang can be a barrier to understanding, and expressing oneself clearly is always helpful.
- As a member of the community you are expected to use examples that are inclusive in terms of gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, class, being differently abled/with disability, religion, beliefs, age, accent, culture, physical appearance, and body size, for all presentations, discussion materials and in conversation.
- Please do not assume anyone's gender and aspire always to use the pronouns preferred by the person addressed.
- Collaboration is vital to reduce redundancy in order for us to share knowledge better. (For example, adding more properties if not needed, may not be the most practical thing to do for the archive to be most effective.) To enable the most effective collaborations please follow the guidelines for how to contribute to the archive and across our forums, and work as transparently as possible. Please welcome new collaborators with respect.
- Questions are welcome and should be treated respectfully. This is not a place where any one person knows everything, and nobody is expected to be perfect. Questions add to the community’s base of knowledge and ability to communicate effectively.
- A great proportion of the work is done on a voluntary basis in this community. Please make an effort to look for existing resources and work through issues on your own before addressing the community for help. To give back to the community please don’t hesitate to offer help to others.
- Community members should be active bystanders in that there is an emphasis on calling out bad behavior and an impetus to step in to help resolve issues should they occur. If you notice a potential problem please call attention to it in order to help resolve it.
Anti-Harassment
The DAAP community is dedicated to providing a harassment-free collaborative experience for everyone. Harassment of community participants is not tolerated in any form, including event presentations, email lists, online conferences, chat groups, and in-person gatherings.
Harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Offensive verbal comments, insults, or jokes related to physical or intellectual ability, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, class, religion, beliefs, age, accent, culture, physical appearance or body size. Sexualising or discriminatory jargon is not appropriate.
- Posting or using discriminatory content or images in public spaces. This includes but is not limited to sexually explicit or violent material. Exceptions could be made if relevant for engaging with artworks containing nudity, violent, sexual or discriminatory content where other expressions will not suffice, such as for the purpose of expressing certain forms of critical engagement, for example.
- Deliberate intimidation, violent threats or language directed against another person
- Stalking, or unwanted following
- Non-consensual photography or recording
- Sustained disruption of talks or other communication
- Inappropriate or unwanted physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention
- Posting (or threatening to post) information about other people's personal identity details
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior
If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the community organisers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender, and/or immediate expulsion from the event or communication channel. Participants requested by anyone, to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Please let DAAP community organisers know as soon as possible if you experience or witness anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or may be in breach of the Code of Conduct. Even if you do not want anything done, please still let us know and contact us at daap [dot] community [at] disroot [dot] org, or immediately in person. If the person who is the subject of the allegation or complaint is on the team, they will recuse themselves from handling your incident.
