Orlando was founded as a cultural platform in 2014, as a means to introduce a new, creative and cooperative voice into the mainstream. The name is inspired by the transgressive protagonist of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel. Woolf charts the story of an amazing character, who lives across three centuries in history, and metamorphoses from man to woman half way through. Inspired by the romantic androgyny in the story, Orlando functions in a similar way - to engage both men and women by creating one collective voice. Although founded on questions of gender politics, this lens has provided a critical language that can also be used to tackle and question social and political injustices on many other levels. By challenging socially constructed notions of difference, Orlando looks into a future of united bodies. Text source: http://cargocollective.com/philomenaepps/Orlando.
