Polytechnic developed from a number of conversations between Alex Sainsbury, the director of Raven Row and Richard Grayson over a couple of years before the gallery opened in 2009. It focuses on "progressive" or "experimental" practices. "New media" and time-based practices - performance, film and video, and installation - are a central focus as they are considered to have the history and expectations of art less encoded into their fabric than painting or sculpture.
