The drawings are made with a wide variety of materials including photographs, these being source material collected over a long period of time by the artist via the everyday process of travelling. Each drawing is made slowly and accumulatively bringing into play a kind of fragmented notation of ideas and thoughts, references and disconnected visual styles; the architectural precision required to articulate space collides with the gestural mark, the written text or the apparently casual ‘doodle’. Working slowly and at intervals allows for radically different thought patterns to condition the production of each drawing, there are multiple beginnings and reorganisations of visual material, these intervals take on as much importance as the action of making as they determine the accumulation of ideas for the next beginning. There is an overall sense of antagonism or perhaps anarchism as image piles up on image, as visual coherence is undermined and assaulted by outside ‘rebel’ forces. The power of the photographic image to create a whole, a totality of presence located within the frame is violated by the action of drawing over, disregarding the sovereignty of the photographic moment and rupturing the smooth flow of information. Similarly, the employment of a wide range of drawing materials adds to this destabilising of the totalised image., a ‘politics’ of material is at work in which there is a conflict between the

subtle and the nuanced and the brutal and the industrial. Traditional art materials exist alongside the ‘Magic Marker’ and the ‘Highlighter’,
the high art aesthetic of the drawn image is accosted by the brutality of the everyday industrial/commercial marking material.
